Andy Murray was unlikely to win the French Open and his injury-enforced withdrawal from the tournament probably isn’t a bad idea given that he will have more chance of triumphing at Wimbledon, which is just around the corner.
His absence at Roland Garros has only had a minimal effect on the market, hardening the favouritism of Rafael Nadal, who is 4/6 via William Hill to maintain his stranglehold on the year’s second Grand Slam by landing it for the eighth time in nine renewals.
World number one Novak Djokovic is always a danger and comes in at 15/8 courtesy of Betfred while BetVictor post 16/1 against Roger Federer and David Ferrer is a 25/1 shot (bet365) but it’s hard to see past Nadal, who is so dominant on the Paris clay.
In the Women’s event, Serena Williams is Paddy Power’s 11/8 favourite but she hasn’t won the competition since 2002 so reigning champion Maria Sharapova is arguably a better bet at 5/1 with Stan James to retain the title.
