The past three runnings of the bumper at Kempton have gone the way of Cheltenian (en route to winning the Champion Bumper), Prince Of Pirates and Aegean Dawn, and Master Malt (4:30) can add his name to the list this afternoon on his first start for Jonjo O’Neill and JP McManus.
The five-year-old cost his new connections £140,000 in November and they will be more than hopeful that the son of Milan, who is out of an un-raced sister to the useful Cockney Trucker, can make an immediate impact in the green and gold.
He raced just once for Alistair Whillans last term, splitting smart novice hurdlers River Maigue and Duke Of Navan on Scottish National day at Ayr. The former is now high up in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle market, while the latter, who was 15 lengths behind the selection, is two from three over hurdles.
A reproduction of that form would be good enough to land most bumpers and it has to be hoped that he has improved in the 293 days since we last saw him.
