Paul Ferguson has one selection for us on Wednesday; Tail Of The Bank in the Ayr 3.10. Compare odds and bet.
Should Ayr pass the 10:45am second inspection, there is a couple of really interesting races from the Scottish track, including the second division of the 2m novices’ hurdle, in which Kings Palace faces classy ex-Flat performer Thimaar.
The former won a Plumpton bumper for David Pipe by 18 lengths on debut, before being rundown late on by Captain Cutter at Ascot last month. The front pair came 11 lengths clear and the race looked good at the time, though the form has been slightly let down by the third and fourth being beaten. He should still make up in to a useful hurdler and will handle conditions.
The former John Gosden trained Thimaar is now in the care of Donald McCain and the five-year-old won a Kempton handicap off 93 last April, before finishing third to Ascot Gold Cup winner Colour Vision in the Group 3 Sagaro Stakes the following month.
The Dynaformer gelding was last seen finishing down the field in the Group 2 Lonsdale Cup at York and he is clearly a fascinating recruit to hurdles. The concern with him is that this will be the softest ground he has encountered, though he did handle cut on the level. This should be a really good race between the pair.
Later on the card Tail Of The Bank (3:10) looks worth an each-way interest in the feature Bet Victor Non Runner Free Bet At Cheltenham Handicap Chase, with Laura Young’s 10-year-old trading at 10/1 with Paddy Power on Wednesday morning.
At his best over this trip on soft ground, the son of Flemensfirth remains unexposed after just six starts over fences, two of which came against Finian’s Rainbow in his novice campaign. During that season, he beat the well-touted Surfing at Chepstow and finished runner-up to the smart Fine Parchment in the Greatwood Gold Cup at Newbury off a mark of 133.
Pulled-up early on his return at Chepstow in October (made a mistake at the second), Liam Heard’s mount is better judged on his most recent start, when he travelled well into the straight before fading in to a distant fourth behind Carrickboy.
Dropped 4lbs for that run, if he has come on for the outing, he wouldn’t be without a squeak here and looks worth a chance at the odds, with everything in his favour.
