The Scottish Premier League returns this weekend but now Rangers are no longer in the top flight north of the border, it’s as good as a foregone conclusion that Celtic, at 1/33 with Skybet, will retain the title.
It’s 10/1 at Paddy Power for anyone other than the Hoops to come out on top but it’s far more unlikely that Neil Lennon’s will fail to clinch first place and subsequently, the betting without the champions is where the value lies.
At 2/1 (Coral) Dundee United look like the team to beat in that department even though Hearts are only slightly bigger in price at 5/2 courtesy of BetVictor; the Jambos are always reasonably strong but they’re a tough team to judge given what goes on behind the scenes at Tynecastle.
Motherwell meanwhile, were last term’s ‘best of the rest’, Rangers excepted, and they’re 6/1 at bet365 to clinch second place this season, but the Steelemen could struggle to replicate last term’s achievement and they’re overlooked here.
At the bottom, the Gers’ replacements, Dundee, look like the natural choice at 9/4 via bodog to prop up the rest but newly promoted Ross County will also find the going tough and Paddy Power rate them at 10/3 for the wooden spoon in what looks like a two-horse race.
Punters risking a few quid in the top scorer market will find it hard to see past Celtic’s Gary Hooper but at just 4/6 with BetVictor, the Bhoys front man is hardly a major money-spinner. A shrewd move would therefore be to back Dundee United’s Jon Daly each-way at odds of 12/1 (BetVictor) as three places are paid.
