Paul Ferguson has two selections at Newmarket for us today; Valiant in the 1.20 and Nabucco in the 2.25. Compare odds and bet.
Newmarket’s July meeting gets underway with the Group 3 Bahrain Trophy and the step up to 1m5f on easy ground looks ideal for the unbeaten Valiant (1:20) who is fancied to maintain his 100% record, despite having a bit to find with Rewarded and Shantaram on official figures.
William Haggas’ Galileo colt made an impressive winning debut at Newbury in May and followed up in a York handicap last month, where he took an eternity to get going over 1m2f.
The chestnut won going away in the end, promising much more for the future over this sort of trip. Ryan Moore, who gave him a brilliant ride last time on the Knavesmire, retains the partnership and the 11/4 on offer with Bet Victor on Wednesday evening seemed more than fair.
Later on the card, Moore rides Fiorente in the Princess Of Wales’s Stakes and Sir Michael Stoute’s four-year-old hinted at a return to form behind stable-mate Sea Moon last time in the Hardwicke Stakes, travelling really well for a long way. He could go well this afternoon at 14/1, but the rain puts me off slightly so the second bet of the day comes in the competitive Goldsmiths Handicap.
John Gosden’s Nabucco (2:25) was well backed when winning for this column at Windsor last month, form that I’ve followed recently and is working out reasonably well. Runner-up Guarantee was another winner for us last week, while fifth home Rysbrack went close for us on Monday evening in a handicap off 74.
The Dansili colt begins life off a mark of 88 and, given his ability to handle easy ground, he looks sure to run a big race for a stable that continues in red-hot form.
Available at 6/1 with Hills and Boylesports on Wednesday evening, he looks a solid each-way play in a warm 14-runner renewal.
Thursday’s selections:
1:20 Newmarket Valiant
2:25 Newmarket Nabucco
