Paul Ferguson has one selections for us on Saturday; Michelangelo
Despite the Northumberland Plate and Irish Derby taking place, it’s a relatively quiet punting Saturday this week, with the heavy ground spoiling the big handicap up at Newcastle and, with only six runners taking on Camelot at the Curragh, there isn’t much of an angle in to that Classic either.
Lyric Street was a horse I had short-listed for the ‘Plate’ earlier in the week, but he’s unlikely to handle the ground, while Lexington Bay is a stayer on the up who handles soft ground, though his draw is far from ideal.
Imperial Monarch is a colt regular readers will know I’m a big fan of and I’d have been keen to back him each-way in the Irish Derby had there been another runner. At the time of writing, bookmakers aren’t offering any ‘without Camelot’ markets or place only markets, but if they do that’s the way to go.
Elsewhere it’s pretty ordinary stuff for a Saturday, but Michelangelo (2:00) ought to be tough to beat in Newmarket’s opening £150,000 Tattersalls Millions 3-Y-O Cup.
A winner for this column when very heavily backed at Goodwood last month, the Galileo colt looks a horse of some potential and can continue his ascendancy this afternoon.
He represents the John Gosden-William Buick team who could do no wrong at Ascot last week and he can continue their fine form.
Dandino will be popular among those looking to make it a short price double and, strictly on his close second to Sea Moon last time, he will be hard to beat in the Listed Fred Archer Stakes, but the winner needed the run badly that day. Of the pair at short odds at HQ this afternoon, I prefer Michelangelo.
