Paul Ferguson has another selection for us at Royal Ascot today; The Fugue in the 3.05. Compare odds and bet.
This afternoon’s Ribblesdale Stakes looks a tremendous renewal of the Group 2 contest, in which The Fugue (3:05) is fancied to gain compensation for looking a rather unlucky loser when third in The Oaks last time.
She will need to reverse form with Shirocco Star, who finished second at Epsom, and will also need to confirm form with four other runners from the Classic, including fourth home Vow, but John Gosden’s filly was hampered early on and didn’t enjoy any luck in running at all, so she can do just that.
Of those who didn’t contest The Oaks, Momentary, who beat Shirocco Star at Newbury, and Irish raider Princess Highway warrant respect, especially the latter who had Oaks winner Was back in third when winning a Group 3 last time.
However, The Fugue, who was hugely impressive when winning the Musidora at York in May on the back of a fourth in the 1,000 Guineas, remains a potentially high-class filly and can take this under the in-form William Buick.
The selection was trading at 2/1 on Wednesday evening, but there was plenty of money around for several of her opponents, so it is hoped she touches 9/4 or even 5/2 at some point this morning.
Elsewhere on the card, the handicaps look devilishly difficult with Born To Surprise just one that holds claims in a wide-open Britannia Stakes, while Mick Channon’s Cay Verde has the best form on offer in the opening Norfolk Stakes, having beaten Windsor Castle winner Hototo on his penultimate start.
