Bookies were left celebrating Webb Simpson’s US Open victory but Ladbrokes have cut the American to 40/1 for the Open Championship.
Simpson’s triumph at Olympic caught punters off guard as most had been backing Tiger Woods, Jim Furyk, Graeme McDowell and Padraig Harrington in-play. This was great news for bookies who had nudged the 26-year-old out to 80/1 at one point during the tournament as bets flooded in for the more fancied contenders.
However, the layers are acting a little more cautiously with regards to Simpson’s chances in next month’s Open Championship at Royal Lytham & St Annes, Ladbrokes cutting him to 40/1 from 66s to make it back-to-back majors.
Jessica Bridge of Ladbrokes told Betrescue, “Webb Simpson’s the forgotten man. He was so close to winning the US Money List last year but ever since he’s been friendless with punters. Needless to say we’re joining in the celebrations as he kept under the radar and let Furyk take all the limelight.”
Tiger Woods meanwhile, remains favourite for the Open at 7/1 with Betfred, Lee Westwood and Rory McIlroy are both 12/1, via Stan James and Paddy Power respectively and William Hill rate Luke Donald at 16/1.
