After the unique challenge of Monaco the F1 circus moves to Canada and a Montreal circuit that is ultra fast in places, with its long straights, but also has tight hairpins which generally proceed the 200 mph drags. It is a real challenge and is one of the favourite circuits on the calendar for both drivers and teams alike.
The weather can be unpredictable which adds to the mix and with six different winners from the 6 Grand Prix to date will we have a Magnificent 7th different winner on Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve on Sunday?
Lewis Hamilton is a dual winner in Canada, including his first Grand Prix success back in 2007, and McLaren have won the last two races including Jenson Button’s famous win last year when a drive-through penalty for speeding behind the safety car in a wet race dropped him back through the field to last place at half-way.
Assisted by the deployment of the safety car he carefully picked his way through the field and passed World Champion Sebastian Vettel on the final lap when the German made a rare mistake.
Fernando Alonso leads the World Championship by three points from the Red Bulls of Vettel and Mark Webber who won a rather dull Monaco Grand Prix last time from pole following Michael Schumacher’s five-grid penalty carried over from Barcelona.
Hamilton is the only one of the top five in the drivers’ standings without a win so far this term but McLaren will be confident of the treble; Hamilton is 4/1 favourite at BetVictor for a personal Montreal hat-trick with Alonso 5/1 to extend his Championship lead and Vettel 11/2.
We have any number of markets on the race including betting 4/11 that the safety car will be deployed during the race (15/8 NOT to be a safety car) and offering 5/4 that there will be a first lap retirement (4/7 NOT to be a retirement on the first lap).
It is one of the most eagerly awaited races in the calendar; the long straights give plenty of opportunities for overtaking but there’s a lot of wear on brakes and tyres alike; qualifying is important but not essential as in Monaco.
With no stand out driver or team so far in 2012 this could be a pivotal race in the destination of the World Title; not everything has gone right for McLaren so far this year but Montreal is one of their favourite circuits; could this be the race which ignites Hamilton’s challenge? Or will Red Bull build on the success of Monaco?
