Paul Ferguson has three selections at Sandown: Times Up (7.20), Carlton House (7.55) and Top Offer (8.25). Compare odds and bet
Despite disappointing in the 2,000 Guineas on his return, it is easy to give Top Offer (8:25) another chance back on a quicker surface and Roger Charlton’s colt is fancied to land this evening’s Listed Heron Stakes, on a stellar Sandown card.
The son of Dansili created a big impression when winning at Newbury last August and, at 3/1 early on Wednesday evening (with Bet365 and Ladbrokes), he represented fair value down in grade.
Sir Michael Stoute’s string still haven’t hit top gear, but it will be disappointing if Carlton House (7:55) can’t land the Group 3 Brigadier Gerard Stakes on his eagerly-awaited return.
The Queen’s four-year-old was beaten favourite in both the Epsom and Irish Derbies last year, but could still develop in to a top-class colt and his best performance last year came first time out, when he won the Dante at York.
In receipt of 3lbs from Colombian, he looks worth backing at odds against (11/10 with Paddy Power on Wednesday evening) to give his trainer a record seventh win in the race.
Jockey Ryan Moore could be in for a Group 3 double, as he also rides Times Up (7:20) in the Henry II Stakes earlier on the card for trainer John Dunlop.
The son of Olden Times is still unexposed over this 2m trip and was still on an upward curve at the end of last season, winning impressively at Newmarket in September.
He wasn’t far behind tonight’s favourite, Opinion Poll, on his final start last term at Ascot in October and, with the forecast ground in his favour and in receipt of 2lbs from his main market rival, he appeals as a bit of value at 9/2. Indeed, the each-way thieves will probably mop that up as a bet to nothing.
The six-year-old could finish only fifth on his return at York 13 days ago, but he always needs his first run of the season, plus he travelled like the best horse in that contest for the majority of the race. He can land this en route to the Ascot Gold Cup.
Thursday’s selections:
7:20 Sandown Times Up
7:55 Sandown Carlton House
8:25 Sandown Top Offer
