Aidan O’Brien won the 2,000 Guineas five times between 1998 and 2008 and he can take the opening Classic of the season again this afternoon with Racing Post Trophy winner Camelot (3:10).
The Montjeu colt looked the real deal at Doncaster in October, quickening very impressively to see off four rivals with the minimum of fuss. He was ridden with extreme confidence that day and looked to have the pace to win over a mile at three.
On the negative side the breeding experts will say he will be better over further, which could well be true, and he’s only beaten eight horses in two races. However, he left a real impression on me last year and I feel he’ll be difficult to beat. The selection is available at 2/1 with Paddy Power this morning.
The Group 2 Jockey Club Stakes is a cracking supporting race and I’ll be very interested to see how Fiorente fares, as I have a feeling he could be one to follow for Sir Michael Stoute this season.
However, he comes up against Arc sixth Meandre (2:30) here and Andre Fabre’s Slickly colt is a Group 1 winner without a penalty, having won the Grand Prix De Paris last July.
Fabre took this race in 2006 with Shirocco and in 2008 with Getaway, so you have to assume he has had this race in mind since the four-year-old come back in to training.
The selection is available at 9/4 this morning, while Coral offer 5/1 about Fiorente who may appeal to those of you looking for a solid each-way selection.
At Goodwood Sir Henry Cecil’s Vita Nova (2:15) looks a class apart in the Listed event for fillies and mares.
The thought of her saddle slipping in the Group 2 Lancashire Oaks at Haydock last year still brings back bad memories as she’d have bolted up that day and the daughter of Galileo went on to chase home Irish Oaks winner Blue Bunting in the Yorkshire equivalent.
If she’s anywhere near her best on her return the five-year-old will be victorious here and she was trading at 4/6 overnight with Bet365 and Hills.
Over in Ireland Clondaw Warrior (1:45) really ought to be winning the www.limerickraces.ie maiden hurdle for Shark Hanlon, who has struggled for form in recent months.
The five-year-old won bumpers at Down Royal and Cork before completing the hat-trick at Cheltenham in October. The form of that race isn’t particularly strong by track standards, but he looks a cut above this lot and is another for short priced backers to get stuck into.
He opened up 4/6 with Bet365 this morning, but was trading around 4/5 on Betfair so I’m hopeful a price nearer Evs will be on offer at some point, especially given the poor form of the stable.
