Live on SS1 & 3: Thu 08.00 & 20.00: Angus Loughran previews this week’s Avantha Masters and also the Northern Trust Open.
Phil Mickleson produced one of the rounds of his life on Sunday to return to winning ways after a slow start to 2012 and it usually pays to follow Phil while he is hot so 10/1 with Boylesports is a great price about a player who clearly loves Riviera and won back to back here in 2008/9. He has also pulled out of next week’s Matchplay to spend time with his family so will not be holding anything back at the Northern Trust Open.
Adam Scott goes well when fresh and looks value at 30/1 at Betfred while KJ Choi looks a great each way bet at 40/1 (Skybet) in this week’s PGA event.
For those looking for a big price, Fred Couples at 110/1 with Sportingbet might not be that obvious but he loves Riviera and should have been at least placed if not better when 7th here last year.
The Avantha Masters in New Delhi offers some of the lesser lights on the European Tour their chance to find the winner’s enclosure and Soren Hansen appeals to me here at 40/1, available at Totesport. Tommy Fleetwood at 80/1 (Coral) looks overpriced and the experience of Thongchai Jaidee at 30/1 (Blue Square) should also go well.
Local knowledge of conditions and straight hitters are favoured and after SSP Chowrasia won last year it may be profitable to pick another local player in Gaganjeet Bhullar who knows the course better than anyone in the field and is available via William Hill at 125/1 which is a huge price and worth taking each way.
Good luck
Angus Loughran
