Paul Ferguson has one selection for us on Saturday; Ocean Wind in the Newmarket 15:50. Compare odds and bet.
A winner at the second attempt since switching to the Flat, Ocean Wind (3:50) was a very useful bumper performer last season and should relish the step up in distance in the Cesarewitch Trial at Newmarket on Saturday.
Roger Teal’s four-year-old beat some exciting novice hurdle prospects in a Listed bumper at Newbury in February, before finishing a creditable sixth in the Weatherbys Champion Bumper at Cheltenham.
Given five months off, the Teofilo colt switched codes, and following an encouraging fourth at Lingfield (all-weather), he returned to the turf course at the same track to beat a subsequent winner in handsome fashion. He only just seems to be getting going over 1m4f, and although he will be stepping into the unknown in terms of distance here (beyond 2m), he gives the impression that it will suit, and he ran up the hill well enough on soft ground at Cheltenham.
A mark of 89 is probably no more than fair, but he faces a field full of much more exposed rivals, and he can strike under Jack Mitchell.
At Newbury, I’m interested in The City’s Phantom, in the valuable Dubai Duty Free Handicap, although it is a big rise in class and he is now 9lbs higher than when winning a shade cosily at Yarmouth in mid-July. Hollie Doyle can do little wrong at present, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see him go well, whilst drying ground would add a little more confidence.
Saturday’s selection:
3:50 Newmarket – Ocean Wind; 7/4 William Hill
