Five to follow on Saturday

TEMPUS (3.35) can roll back the years for trainer Roger Charlton by lifting the bet365 Cambridgeshire Handicap at Newmarket.

Charlton famously landed a huge gamble in 2005 with 5-1 favourite Blue Monday and Tempus boasts all the credentials to step into those illustrious hoofprints. The son of Kingman has won four of his last five starts and a 4lb rise for his most recent success at Ascot, when always travelling like the winner, isn’t too much of an imposition.

John Gosden and Frankie Dettori teamed up to scoop the last two renewals with classy three-year-olds Wissahickon and Lord North, and this year they go to war with Al Ruffaa, winner of three races on the bounce before floundering on the very deep ground at Haydock last time.

William Haggas has a trio of sound prospects in John Smith’s Cup scorer Sinjaari, ultra-consistent Montatham and improving three-year-old Ilaraab, winner of his last four races.

Sinjaari overcame an absence to fend off Certain Lad at York and the runner-up has since landed the Group 3 Strensall Stakes from Epic Hero and Lord Glitters. Montatham edged out Sir Busker and Top Rank at York and the grey looks sure to give his backers a good run for their money. Mick Channon gives stable apprentice George Bass the leg up on top weight Certain Lad.

The first leg of the Autumn Double promises to be a cracker and shop around for value, with some bookmakers offering six places each-way.

Aidan O’Brien has scooped the Royal Lodge Stakes seven times, including the last two, and relies on Ontario, third in the Futurity Stakes at the Curragh last month. The prize is more likely to stay on home soil, however, and NEW MANDATE (1.50) has really found his stride lately, scoring in game fashion at Doncaster. Cobh, unbeaten Gear Up and Pleasant Man further bolster British hopes.

The Cheveley Park Stakes sees bookmakers favouring unbeaten Dandalla. Her trainer Karl Burke has been struggling to find winners and MISS AMULET (2.25) has been thriving on a busy schedule. This will be her seven start since early June but Ken Condon’s Miss Amulet has won three of her last four starts, the most recent being a length defeat of Sacred in the Lowther Stakes at York. Sacred re-opposes and William Haggas reaches for first-time cheekpieces.

All eight runners declared for a red-hot renewal of the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes hold legitimate claims and a narrow vote is given to LUCKY VEGA (3.00), so unlucky when denied racing room in the National Stakes at the Curragh. Jessica Harrington’s colt had earlier thrashed The Lir Jet in the Phoenix Stakes and sets the bar high.

Supremacy looked a machine when sprinting clear of Yazaman at Goodwood and although the runner-up hasn’t done a great deal to advertise the form, it would be no surprise to see Clive Cox’s colt going close, along with Minzaal and Method.

At Haydock, DANYAH (2.05) can gain compensation for an unlucky third behind Hortzador at Ripon when denied racing room at a crucial stage. Hamdan Al Maktoum’s three-year-old had earlier scored

at Doncaster in June and has scope for improvement in this one-mile handicap. Hortzador won at Goodwood earlier this week to further boost Danyah’s claims.
