Paul Ferguson has one selection for us on Sunday; Deja in the Haydock 3.15. Compare odds and bet.
Most of the focus on Sunday will be on the Eclipse card from Sandown, but Haydock also stages a cracking card, which includes the Lancashire Oaks and the Old Newton Cup.
The latter sees three of the first five home from Royal Ascot’s Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes renew rivalry, with Scarlet Dragon trying to supplement his win, from a 7lbs higher mark. Runner-up that day Deja (3:15) re-opposes on 2lb better terms, and with that run behind him, might be capable of turning the tables.
Still very lightly-raced (the quick turnaround is a slight concern, given the number of times that we have seen him in recent years), he travelled very strongly at Ascot, perhaps being lit up by being drawn down the inside, as he had to be ridden from the stalls. He can be keen in his races, but I suspect he will be ridden with more restraint on Sunday, and from his draw (13) he can, hopefully, get some cover. The five-year-old won’t mind any further rain – which is due in Merseyside – and he can defy his big-weight. He should be backed each-way, in what looks a really good renewal.
Of the opposition, others to consider include Ranch Hand – who won’t mind deteriorating ground, and is a course winner – and Laafy, who won impressively at Newbury on his reappearance. He was behind Ranch Hand here last year (1m6f) and that form is strong, plus he looked like he had improved over the winter, given the ease with which he won at Newbury. Soft ground will aid both horses over this trip.
