Charlie’s Weekend Whispers

Former Talksport man Charlie McCann marks your card with four to follow on Saturday at York, Newbury and Haydock. View selections below

The John Smith’s Cup is the feature race at York this afternoon and it is a fiercely competitive renewal of this famous 10f handicap. The shortlist is particularly long, but my two against the field are Solid Stone and Sinjaari (2.30) with marginal preference for the latter who is making his seasonal reappearance.

The selection has been gelded since his last start at Newmarket in October and he has bits of form – runner up to duel Gp 2 winner Headman in the London Cup at Newbury – that suggests he could be well treated from his current mark. Stevie Donohoe takes the ride with the stable’s regular pilots Tom Marquand – rides stablemate Desert Icon – and James Doyle – takes the mount on Ed Walker’s market leader Caradoc – seemingly favouring other runners.

The ew recommendation – 14/1 at William Hill who are paying five places – has a decent draw in stall seven and he can give proud Yorkshireman William Haggas a third win in the race. Solid Stone would have been the selection had he not been drawn out on the wing in stall 22.

At Newbury Method (2.15) can make it two out of two in the listed 6f juvenile contest for Martyn Meade. The form of his Doncaster maiden success was given a boost when the runner up – filly Fev Rover – filled the same position in the Gp 2 Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes on the July course last weekend. The selection was backed as if defeat was out of the question on Town Moor and Oisin Murphy takes over from Ryan Moore in the saddle. The selection is 5/4 to maintain his unbeaten record.

The veteran Judicial (4.00) carries a 3lbs penalty for scoring on Newcastle’s tapeta surface last time but Julie Camacho’s stable star is equally adept on turf and he is taken to give weight and a beating to his 11 rivals in the Gp 3 Hackwood Stakes.

The each way selection – 5/1 with Unibet – is drawn near Shine So Bright who looks sure to take those drawn low along at a fair clip dropping back in trip to 6f for the first time since his two-year-old days.

In the feature race at Haydock this evening I hope to see Cap Francais (7,55) defy a 6lbs rise for scoring over tonight’s C&D last month. The selection was being primed for a crack at the Hunt Cup but missed Royal Ascot. Luke Morris would not have been my choice of jockey and a draw in stall nine is less than ideal, but he was a fluent winner last time and he is open to further improvement at a mile.
