Runner-up at Haydock last month, THE CON MAN (2:35) can go one place better at the Merseyside track on Monday.
A novice hurdle winner at Carlisle last December, Donald McCain’s six-year-old was having his first start in a year when beaten 5 lengths by Marie’s Rock, who runs in the Listed mares event down at Taunton. Ebony Jewel (3rd) runs earlier on the card so should be noted whilst On To Victory shaped well at Newbury on Saturday, so that form looks reasonably strong.
He beat Garrettstown (went close off 129 at Aintree this season) at Carlisle and it was surprising that the handicapper dropped him 8lbs for that Haydock return. A mark of 123 looks more than fair and he won’t mind the testing ground or the longer trip.
