Paul Ferguson has two selections for us on Saturday; Rare Clouds in the 12:30 and Good Boy Bobby 13.05 both at Wetherby. Compare odds and bet.
At Wetherby, the opening novices’ hurdle looks a decent event, in which Rare Clouds (12:30) is fancied to go well for Sue Smith and Danny Cook. Sixth in a bumper at this track last term, he filled the same spot in a decent race at Carlisle just 13 days ago and the Smith horses seem to be improving for a run. Still on the look-out for a first winner of the season (0-72 to date), they appear to be turning the corner and stable-star Midnight Shadow was unlucky when falling at the final fence on Monday.
The selection is a full-brother to the same connections’ Vintage Clouds (and a half-brother to Vintage Star) so should appreciate this stiffer test and is certainly bred to cope with the testing conditions. There are several nice types in opposition, but he might be best served to cope with the ground, and it is hoped that he is available at a decent price.
The second race on the card is a two-mile novice chase, in which Good Boy Bobby (1:05) is likely to take plenty of beating. He is also likely to be priced up accordingly, but the form of his second behind Brewin’upastorm (winner on Thursday) now looks really solid (the aforementioned Midnight Shadow was well back in third that day) and a reproduction of that should be good enough, around a track where he won a heavy ground bumper.
His likely main mark rival Garrettstown will need further in time and it will be disappointing if Good Boy Bobby can’t score under Sam Twiston-Davies. If he’s too short, sit back and watch with the future in mind, as he could well be a Graded class novice this season.
