ALRAJAA (1.00) has been a good friend to favourite backers lately and he can again justify fairly short odds at Lingfield.
John Gosden has boxed up a strong team for an attractive card and Alrajaa fairly hosed up at Chelmsford City and Kempton on his last two starts, giving every indication that he is a much-improved three-year-old worth sticking with up in grade.
Gosden gives the leg-up to Frankie Dettori on his Cambridgeshire winner LORD NORTH (2.45) in the Betway Churchill Stakes. Lord North has since gone on to mop up a Listed event at Newmarket, easing a couple of lengths clear of Pablo Escobarr, and the son of Dubawi boasts a similar profile to stablemate Wissahickon, a previous Cambridgeshire winner that adapted so well to all-weather racing. Lord North looks banker material.
Gosden and Dettori team up again, this time with SCENTASIA (2.10), in the Listed Fillies’ Stakes. She flopped behind Eva Maria at Newmarket but proved that running all wrong next time on the all-weather here, rattling home from Chaleur at the end of October. Scentasia faces a formidable rival in Charlie Appleby’s Magic Lily, third to Laurens in the bet365 Fillies’ Mile and subsequently a runner-up in France.
The Betway Golden Rose is another Listed event, this time over six furlongs. Gifted Master showed blistering speed to scoop the money in 2017 but managed only fifth last year when sent off 2-1 favourite. Hugo Palmer’s gelding got caught up in a speed duel with Corinthia Knight and they cut each others’ throats. That scenario may play out again and ROYAL BIRTH (3.15) should be able to tuck in for a late rattle. He has been in terrific all-weather form and is the each-way call in a tight affair.
There should be no weather worries at Wetherby where FITZROY (12.30) will be hard to beat in the opening 2m 4f Novices’ Hurdle. He appeared sure to benefit from a step up in trip when chasing home the Paul Nicholls-trained Ecco over two miles at Wincanton and trainer Olly Murphy has booked Brian Hughes for this greater stamina test. Ecco has since hacked up at Ascot to boost the value of the form.
