ENABLE (3.40) can emerge victorious in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Qipco Stakes at Ascot, despite facing another stern examination.
John Gosden’s remarkable mare, beaten only once in 12 starts, meets some proven Group 1 opposition headed by Royal Ascot scorer Crystal Ocean and Investec Derby winner Anthony Van Dyck, fitted with cheek-pieces for the first time by Aidan O’Brien. There isn’t much between the first two in the betting on a line through O’Brien’s Magical but Enable has the knack of finding extra when the chips are down.
FANAAR (3.00) is worthy of each-way support in the 29-runner Class 2 handicap, with the William Haggas-trained three-year-old producing a fine effort over course and distance at Royal Ascot, finishing third to Biometric in the Britannia Stakes.
The other three-year-old of interest is Godolphin’s progressive Land Of Legends, while a whole host of older ‘regulars’ such as Ripp Orf, Raising Sand, Burnt Sugar, Firmament and Arbalet, add to the puzzle. With some firms offering six places, shop around for the best ew terms.
MOTAKHAYYEL (2.25) was given a canny ride by Chris Hayes to score with something in hand at Newmarket’s July meeting, charting a course up the centre of the track before edging over to the favoured stands’ rail. A 6lb penalty shouldn’t anchor his progress. Wings Of Time, another winner at the July fixture, rates a threat.
At York, GET KNOTTED (2.05) can make a bold bid to scoop the handicap named in his honour as he seeks to land the race for the fourth consecutive year. He has dropped to an attractive mark and with a few showers expected, underfoot conditions should be ideal.
REGAL REALITY (3.15) has been installed favourite for the Group 2 Sky Bet York Stakes. He thumped Matterhorn in the Brigadier Gerard Stakes at Sandown in May and produced a personal-best when third in the Coral-Eclipse. That form gives Sir Michael Stoute’s colt the edge over Bangkok, a well-held second to Japan at Royal Ascot.
If the heavens open soft ground specialist Addeybb comes to the fore, especially given his impressive demolition job from a very wide draw in the Wolferton Stakes at the royal meeting. The cheek-pieces which were worn for the first time that day are retained. Elarqam, third in the Wolferton, was a beaten favourite in this race 12 months ago but cannot be dismissed in a contest tighter than the betting might suggest.
