Paul Ferguson two selections from Newmarket for us on Saturday; Spirit Ridge at 2.45 and Buzz at 5.35. Compare odds and bet.
Following a promising return at Newmarket on 1000 Guineas day, Spirit Ridge (2:45) is fancied in this afternoon’s 1m6f handicap, on the July course.
Amanda Perrett’s four-year-old promises to be even better over this longer trip and remains open to plenty of improvement, after just five career starts. Versatile with regards to ground conditions, the son of Nathaniel holds an entry in the Northumberland Plate and he would probably need to win this in order to get into the Newcastle showpiece in three weeks’ time.
Later on the card Buzz (5:35) is another worthy of each-way support in the concluding 1m2f handicap, although the current good-to-firm ground is a concern.
Hughie Morrison’s five-year-old was a good winner for this column last September, when beating Mountain Angel (won twice this season, including last weekend at Epsom), but that came on soft ground and he has been pulled out due to the ground on more than one occasion. If the rain arrives (and there is plenty forecast between the time of writing and post time), he remains a horse capable of adding to that sole turf success and – in any case – he would probably be taken out again, if the ground were deemed too quick.
