TRUE SELF (2.25) is a very worthy favourite to land the Betway Pinnacle Stakes at Haydock. The Willie Mullins-trained filly will get the deep ground she handles so well, having recorded a victory at Gowran Park in the mud on her comeback last month. True Self ended last season on a high, trotting up at Bath (soft) and pulling clear of Air Pilot in a Listed event at Newmarket (soft).
SIR DANCEALOT (3.35) is back in calmer waters over a more suitable trip in the Group 3 Betway John Of Gaunt Stakes. The five-year-old wasn’t disgraced behind Mustashry in the G1 Lockinge Stakes at Newbury, the mile clearly over-stretching his stamina. Sir Dancealot is back to seven furlongs and he gave weight and a beating to Dream Of Dreams and Breton Rock over this trip in the Hungerford Stakes.
GANTIER (1.45) is closely matched with Alhaazem and Prejudice on their running behind Kiefer at Newbury. That came on good to firm and Gantier didn’t seem to be enjoying the experience when put under pressure. The quirky son of Frankel should be more at home on this easy surface and had earlier stayed on dourly to score at Newcastle. Frankie Dettori can nurse him home.
At Beverley, ELERFAAN (1.25) can get the meeting off to a flier. The gelding’s neck defeat at the hands of Gossiping at Chester in early May was made to look a bit tasty when the winner hosed up at Epsom last week. Trainer Rebecca Bastiman has her small string in good nick.
The Hilary Needler Trophy, a Conditions race for two-year-old fillies over five furlongs, is one of the track’s marquee races and ROSE OF KILDARE (2.00) has accumulated plenty of experience in a relatively short period. Mark Johnston’s filly is chasing a hat-trick following victories at Hamilton and Redcar, and sets a decent standard.
