BATTASH (4.00) is weighted to repeat last year’s thrilling victory in the Temple Stakes at Haydock. The Charlie Hills-trained speedball gave 5lb and more to all his rivals and got the verdict over Washington DC, Kachy and Mabs Cross in a tight finish. Battash meets all those rivals on better terms and is poised to make a winning return to action.
The Amix Silver Bowl is one of the biggest betting three-year-old handicaps of the season so far and AWEEDRAM (2.50) can make a bold bid to land a hat-trick of victories for Alan King. The gelding beat previous winner I’m Available at Ascot on soft ground and handled a much quicker surface when accounting for Archaeology at Newmarket.
Haydock’s curtain-raiser is a tricky two-mile handicap but PIRATE KING (2.15) can reward an each-way interest. Harry Dunlop sent him to Doncaster for his seasonal debut three weeks ago and Pirate King shaped well in third, hitting the front three out before the lack of race-fitness took its toll.
VINTAGER (1.55) should go close in an interesting opener at Goodwood. Charlie Appleby’s four-year-old put a couple of below-par efforts behind him when third to Elector under a big weight at Newmarket earlier this month. Thundering Blue and Willie John may provide the sternest resistance.
Jim Goldie has made several successful raids on Goodwood in the past, notably with popular Hawkeyethenoo in the 2012 Stewards’ Cup, and it could be worth following THEGLASGOWWARRIOR (4.20), a stayer in form after edging out Fire Fighting at Hamilton last Friday evening.
