Paul Ferguson has two selections from Newton Abbot on Friday; Colonel Custard at 1.40 and Maria’s Benefit at 3.25.. Compare odds and bet.
Newton Abbot stages a decent card on Friday and the action gets underway with a competitive novices’ hurdle.
Both course winner Crooks Peak and Ludlow scorer Rouge Vif (a non-runner earlier in the week when put up here) impressed in bumpers, but so did COLONEL CUSTARD (1:40) who also won at this track.
Third on debut, Nicky Martin’s five-year-old won with plenty in hand on good ground in May and looks a promising recruit. Available at 5-1 overnight, he’s worth backing each-way.
Later on the card, the exciting MARIA’S BENEFIT (3:25) can land a competitive novices’ chase.
Another course winner, the free-going mare was a revelation last season winning five times, and she’s a former winning Pointer. The one concern is that she was beaten on her hurdles debut last September (when I managed to get her beaten after selecting her here) but she was a non-runner eight days ago so should be fairly straight now.
This is a decent little heat, but in receipt of 7lbs mares’ allowance she could be hard to peg back from the front. I expected her to be a little shorter than the overnight 15-8.
Friday’s selections:
1:40 Newton Abbot – Colonel Custard; 13/2 Betvictor
3:25 Newton Abbot – Maria’s Benefit; 2/1 Bet365
