A non-runner due to the ground at Stratford last Saturday Cause Toujours (7:20) can land the Merseyrail Handicap Hurdle at Aintree this evening.
The six-year-old – who was sent off favourite for the 2017 Champion Bumper – had a wind operation prior to making a winning debut for Ian Williams last month and appears to be on an attractive mark (121) for this handicap debut.
A headstrong individual, he appreciates decent ground and wears a hood for the first time tonight, in the hope that it will help him settle. There doesn’t appear too much pace on here, so he will probably have to be ridden handily but it will be disappointing if he doesn’t prove better than that opening mark.
Alan King’s runner – a four-year-old filly from France – is the unknown quantity in opposition and King supplies the day’s other selection Beringer (4:50) down at Sandown.
Runner-up at Newmarket last month, the Sea The Stars gelding won in taking fashion at Leicester last week and runs here under a 6lb penalty (so is 1lb ‘well in’).
He won in the style of a horse on the up last week and is taken to follow up, with the stable in good order.
