A winner for this column at Stratford on the eve of the Cheltenham Festival Midnight Maestro (3:15) has more on his plate off a 7lb higher mark at Haydock this afternoon, but he looks progressive and can take the step up in class in his stride.
Alan King’s Doncaster bumper winner made the ideal start to his hurdling career when winning nicely at Warwick back in November and, after disappointing at Cheltenham the following month, he bounced back with a sound second to stable-companion Sir Antony Browne (won again since). He readily made short work of an opening handicap mark of 120 last time and, having shown himself at home on a sharp track, he should cope with conditions on Merseyside.
