Runner-up in a decent event at Haydock last month Big River (2:40) can defy the rise in the handicap at Kelso on Saturday.
Lucinda Russell’s seven-year-old has won twice at the track – a bumper and a maiden hurdle – and has winning form in heavy ground. The trip is an unknown, but he ought to last home and, with the stable in fine form and a decent 7lb claimer on board, he is fancied to land the Edinburgh Gin Handicap Hurdle.
Later on the card another bottom-weight to back is Minella Suite (3:50) who is proving costly to follow, but looks to have everything in place here.
A sound second on his chase debut 17 days ago, the step up in trip should suit and, with Brian Hughes an eye-catching booking, he looks set to go very well for Rose Dobbin. Based on his Irish Point-to-Point form and the promise he has shown over hurdles – often travelled up well – he looks capable of winning off his current mark.
