Paul Ferguson has two selections from Haydock for us on Saturday; Politologue in the 1:30 and Elgin at 2:05. Compare odds and bet.
With Ascot under serious doubt at the time or writing, it could well be all about Haydock on Saturday, where Politologue (1:30) bids to make it three from three in a competitive looking Grade 2 novices’ chase.
Paul Nicholls’ grey jumped superbly when winning here on debut and when following up at Ascot, and the drop in trip is not expected to pose any problems. He has to concede weight to five smart rivals, including Bun Doran (a horse regular readers will know I hold in some regard), but he looks a potential Grade 1 novice for me and, with conditions in his favour, he can complete the hat-trick.
Another novice that must concede weight to all is Elgin (2:05) who is also fancied to complete the hat-trick, in the Grade 2 Rossington Main Novices’ Hurdle.
Alan King’s five-year-old won a bumper here and has scored at both Newcastle and Kempton to date over timber. The Kempton contest wasn’t as competitive as usual, but he did it nicely and he sets the standard here.
Again, I’m a fan of one of his opponents (Neon Wolf) but whether a sharp 2m (or even an extended 1m7f) is what he is after, I’m not so sure.
