Paul Ferguson has three selections for us on New Year’s Day; Sam Spinner at Catterick, Capeland at Exeter and Clan Des Obeaux at Cheltenham. Compare odds and bet.
Very impressive at Newbury’s Hennessy meeting Clan Des Obeaux (1:25) can give Paul Nicholls the perfect start to the New Year, in this afternoon’s Grade 2 Dipper Novices’ Chase at Cheltenham.
The race that he won might well have fallen apart, but it was impossible not to be impressed with how he travelled and jumped, and he is taken to back that up in this stronger company.
Up at Catterick Sam Spinner (12:25) can return to winning ways in the opening novices’ hurdle, with the step up to the extended 2m3f very much in his favour.
A smart bumper performer, who won at this track on debut, he won a decent Newcastle novice on debut, before bumping into the potentially smart Mount Mews under his penalty last time.
Exeter also stages a decent card with the hurdling debut of Neon Wolf possibly the highlight in the opener. He will probably be pretty short, however, while Capeland (1:15) looks a potentially well-handicapped horse.
A winner over this sort of trip under today’s rider at Newton Abbot, he had earlier shaped well on debut at Chepstow and a mark of 122 might well underestimate him.
