Paul Ferguson has one selection from Cheltenham for us on Saturday; Champagne West in the 1.50. Compare odds and bet.
Despite being deserted by Richard Johnson Champagne West (1:50) is the one to side with in today’s feature, the Caspian Caviar Gold Cup.
Philip Hobbs’ seven-year-old was a smart novice chaser in the first half of last season and, though he is inclined to hit the odd fence, the son of Westerner is one of a few here who could have genuine aspirations of competing at a higher level (was fourth in the Grade 1 Albert Bartlett the season before).
Unexposed after just four chase starts, the selection has to overcome a 315 day lay-off, but won impressively first time out last season and he is worth chancing, despite Johnson favouring stable companion Village Vic. He should be supported each-way in a typically competitive handicap.
Saturday’s selections:
1:50 Cheltenham: Champagne West; 9/1 bet365
