He is likely to be difficult to beat, but will be priced up accordingly, while the novices’ chase looks a really competitive little contest.
Both Spirit Of Shankly (who is usually at his best at this time of year) and The Grey Taylor (a dual course winner over hurdles) are greatly respected, but SOUTHFIELD ROYALE (2:40) hails from a stable in great form and has long promised to develop into a smart performer.
Neil Mulholland’s five-year-old was two from five over hurdles last season and possesses plenty of scope for fences. The son of Presenting remains lightly raced and goes well fresh, as well as on a decent surface.
