The campaign gets underway proper on Saturday with Atletico Madrid hosting newly promoted Las Palmas at the Vicente Calderon. Diego Simeone’s side enjoyed a solid campaign last season, although failed to match the success of the 2013-14 campaign which saw them snatch the Primera Liga title and reach the final of the Champions League, only to be denied by long time city rivals Real Madrid. Atletico will also be without one of their key players in recent seasons, Arda Turan, who joined Barcelona earlier in the summer and faces a long wait on the sidelines before he makes his debut at Camp Nou due to Fifa’s enforced transfer embargo. Atletico are 2/9 (1.22) to win on the day with bet365, and if those odds sound a little short, Los Rojiblancos are 11/4 (3.75) to win by 2 or more goals.

Barcelona begin their title defence with a tough away fixture at Athletic Bilbao, who on Monday forced an impressive draw at the Nou Camp to secure a 5-1 aggregate victory in the UEFA Super Cup and lift their first trophy in 31 years. Despite the humbling loss, Luis Enrique will be confident of leaving San Mamés with all three points. Barca’s greatest asset is their unbelievable attacking trio of Messi, Suarez and Neymar, who last season scored a combined total of 122 goals in all competitions, and all three of them will be eager to get off to a winning start in the maiden game of the new campaign. The Blaugrana are heavy favourites going into the match, priced at 4/9 (1.44) whilst Bilbao are 9/5 (2.80) to win or hold Barcelona to a draw with bet365.

Runners-up Real Madrid face newly promoted Sporting de Gijón in what will be Rafa Benitez’s first competitive match as Real Madrid boss. In the face of a trophy-less season, Champions League winner Carlo Ancelotti was sacked by Los Blancos and replaced by the former Liverpool manager in a move that surprised many owing to the Spaniard’s dubious pedigree in recent years. It remains to be seen how Rafa will make use of the players at his disposal, although rumours throughout the summer have pointed towards Cristiano Ronaldo being deployed in the central striker role, which may leave question marks over how Karim Benzema will be used, and perhaps might make the Frenchman more open to a move to long-time admirers Arsenal. Despite much speculation about his future, Welsh superstar Gareth Bale looks set to remain at the Bernabéu for another season, despite reported interest from Manchester United and a rumoured £90m bid from executive Ed Woodward. The former Spurs player will be eager to silence his detractors from last season and he’s 15/4 (4.75) to bag the first goal in the encounter. It’s difficult to imagine Gijón getting a result here, but if you’re backing them to do just that, you can do so at 11/1 (12.00) at bet365, whilst the value for Real lies in the goalscorer markets, with Ronaldo, Benzema and Bale 8/15 (1.53), 4/5 (1.80) and 10/11 (1.90) respectively to score anytime.

Whatever the results, the first weekend of La Liga is sure to be a thriller and a huge weekend for betting activity, making it a prime opportunity to secure some valuable players at this early stage in the new season.
