We seek out the value bets in League Two in our preview of the 2014/15 season and Shrewsbury (11/1, Sportingbet) are our title selection.
A strong finish to the 2013/14 season carried Portsmouth away from the League Two relegation zone to the safety of mid-table and with Pompey seemingly on their way back to health after a turbulent period, there’s a real optimism at Fratton Park that the club can start to climb back up the league ladder.
Subsequently, they’ve sold 11,000 season tickets ahead of the new season and have been well backed to land the title, an outcome betway rate at 8/1.
Hot on their heels in the betting are Bury (17/2, 888Sport), another team facing the season with a renewed sense of optimism and the Shakers are followed by bet365’s 9/1 shots Luton, who will be hoping to maintain their momentum following their promotion from the Conference.
Having lost out in the play-offs last season, Burton Albion look a touch overpriced at 16/1 (BetVictor) and as boss Gary Rowett has strengthened well, the Brewers look a banker at 5/4 with Ladbrokes to end up in the top seven.
However, the value in the title betting arguably lies with Shewsbury at 11/1 with Sportingbet. The relegated Shrews have overhauled the squad in order to bounce straight back up to League One, bringing in 15 players and it looks on the face of it like they have recruited wisely.
Tha capture of Liam Lawrence is something of a coup for Town, who have also brought in the likes of James Collins, Scott Vernon and James Wesolowski as well as Swiss ‘keeper Jayson Leutwiler.
Moreover, the retention of youngster Connor Goldson, who had attracted interest from the Premier League, is a huge positive and with plenty of firepower in their ranks Micky Mellon’s side will take some stopping.
At the bottom, an exodus of players is likely to see Exeter struggle and they’re the eye-catching relegation bet at 6/1 courtesy of betway.
Meanwhile, in the top scorer market, Coral have installed Bury’s veteran marksman Ryan Lowe as their 14/1 jolly but at 16/1 (Betfred), Plymouth’s Reuben Reid is set for a big season and at 25/1 via bet365, Carlisle’s Billy Paynter is worth an each-way interest.
Recommended Bets:
Shrewsbury to win League Two – 11/1 (Sportingbet)
Burton to finish in the top seven – 5/4 (Ladbrokes)
Exeter to be relegated – 6/1 (betway)
Billy Paynter to be top scorer – 25/1 (bet365)
