Alan Thomson, the former Racing Editor at the Daily Record, puts up five tips at Lingfield and Newbury on Saturday. View selections below.
LADIES ARE FOREVER (2.40) can repeat her stunning victory 12 months ago in the Hever Sprint Stakes over the razor-sharp five furlong trip. The northern raider is very much at home on Polytrack and will strip sharper after her pipe-opener here over six furlongs last month when sixth to Tarooq from a poor draw. Ladies Are Forever is at her best attacking off a blistering pace and Even Stevens likes to blast from the gates. Addictive Dream should enjoy a nice tow from the leader and rates a threat.
The 32Red Spring Cup, a Listed event over seven furlongs, sees the return of exciting Ertijaal, who met with a setback after an eyecatching Yarmouth romp last season. He will be fancied to take this before trainer William Haggas sets his sights higher but BOW CREEK (3.15) is unlikely to make that popular scenario a formality. With Ertijaal drawn very wide in stall 13, Bow Creek makes plenty of appeal as an each-way alternative as he bids to emulate last season’s all-the-way juvenile victories at Chester and Newbury. Mark Johnston’s three-year-olds have an enviable record at the track.
VAN PERCY (5.35) meets some in-form Polytrack specialists in the Coral-sponsored 1m 4f handicap but can provide last season’s wonderkid Oisin Murphy with a winner. Van Percy produced some cracking turf efforts in stronger company last year and looks poised for a successful season for Andrew Balding.
Over the sticks at Newbury, JOANNE ONE (2.55) could go very well in the fiercely competitive EBF mares’ handicap hurdle final. Trainer James Snowden hit the target with Present View at Cheltenham last week and four-time winner Joanne One looks the type to improve again on the slightly better ground she is expected to encounter at the Berkshire track.
