Not the greatest weekend of racing but still some competitive fare and the hope is that the front-running Heerat can set things up for Krypton Factor (3.15) in Newbury’s 6f Hackwood Stakes; the selection has finished sixth and third in the last two renewals of the Diamond Jubilee at Royal Ascot and that form was franked when the 1-2 Lethal Force and Society Rock filled the same places in the July Cup last weekend.
A winner of the Golden Shaheen on World Cup night back in 2012 a repeat of that form would make his very hard to beat and he goes un-penalised for that success; Luke Morris, who rode at Royal Ascot, again takes the mount on a gelding who has come a long way since he was trained by Sir Mark Prescott as a juvenile.
The Wetherbys Super Sprint can go to Peniaphobia (3.50) and the old combination of Richard Fahey and Paul Hanagan who has won two of his three starts including at Thirsk last time when he didn’t impress despite landing the odds of 1/5. The winner of that Thirsk event (Body And Soul) followed up in this corresponding event 12-months ago and let’s hope lightning strikes twice.
Music Master (4.25) ran a cracker when 5th in the Jersey Stakes last time at Royal Ascot and he can return to winning ways although the filly The Gold Cheongsam looked as if she would appreciate the return to 7f when well held over a mile at the Royal meeting.
At Newmarket Midnight Flower (3.40) has been raised 7lbs for her recent win over today’s C&D and that might not be enough to prevent her following up raised in class; that was the fillies’ first start on fast ground on turf and if in the same mood she will be hard to catch for her excellent apprentice who again takes off a valuable 3lbs.
The Group One action comes from the Curragh with the Irish Oaks; Epsom Oaks winner Talent will be all the rage for Ralph Beckett but a chance is taken on the progressive Royal Ascot winner Riposte (6.15) who is clearly going the right way and can improve past the classic winner.
Irish Oaks: prices from BetVictor:
Talent 5/2
Riposte 5/2
Chicquita 11/2
Alive Alive Oh 11/2
10/1 Bar
At Haydock Zalzilah (6.25) landed a gamble midweek and a 6lb extra mark might not be suffice to prevent him following up in the opening nursery having shown improvement in first-time cheek pieces at Bath. Paul Mulrennan is back on board tonight and whilst he must give plenty of weight to his rivals but he is inform and will bounce off the ground.
Mesmerised can make a winning handicap debut for Marco Botti stepping up in trip to 10f for the first time; the form of her third to Integral and Magic Of Reality has been given a boost by the subsequent exploits of both first and second and she is certainly bred to appreciate the extra distance returning to a surface she made her racecourse debut on.
