Paul Ferguson has one selection for us on Sunday; Don Cossack in the Naas 3.35. Compare odds and bet.
With both domestic meetings needing to pass an early morning inspection, it’s off to Naas for Sunday’s selection, which comes in the feature Grade 2 Paddypower.com Novice Hurdle, a race won by Go Native in 2009 en route to success in the Supreme Novices’ at Cheltenham.
Today’s seven runner contest looks well up to scratch and, though he faces three potentially smart and unbeaten hurdlers in Defy Logic, Moscow Mannon and Annie Power, another chance is given to Don Cossack (3:35) who looked special in bumpers last season.
Gordon Elliott’s six-year-old made a pleasing debut over hurdles in November, beating the smart Sizing Gold (who incidentally beat Defy Logic in a bumper last season), before he fell when beaten by Pont Alexandre in the Grade 1 Navan Novice Hurdle.
The winner has, of course, since franked that form and heads to Cheltenham as favourite for the Neptune Investment, while the selection returned to action at Punchestown earlier in the month.
After jumping upsides at the last, it looked as though he would return to winning ways, but couldn’t get by another Mullins novice, Mozoltov, close home, but again there is no shame in that as he forms part of the Mullins team for the Supreme.
Given that he had been forced in to a break after the Navan fall, Don Cossack might have come on for that recent second and he is worth supporting at 5/2 with Betvictor.
I’m taking a few days off after today, but my column will return next Saturday.
Sunday’s selection:
3:35 Naas Don Cossack (5/2 Betvictor)
