Live on Sky Sports 1: Wed 17:00 Angus Loughran previews this week’s Accenture Match Play Championship | Selections
The WGC Accenture Match Play is the years opening big event but for half the 64 strong field it will be all over on Wednesday after less than one round in the desert in Arizona.
In an FA Cup style shootout with extra holes after 18 updets are likely and although the best can of course win not many would have predicted Andrew Magee v Jeff Maggert in the first final at La Costa in 1999 an event I attended all week.
Despite the risks I like Tiger Woods at 12/1 (Stan James) and Luke Donald at 18/1 (Coral). Even though I understand the early risks I fancy Luke to get past Marcel Siem and Tiger to make no mistake against Charles Howell.
Most bookies offer 1/4 the odds for a place and Paul Lawrie is always a forgotton man by the layers he was superb in his singles matchplay in Ryder Cup dispatching Brandt Snedeker in style and has a great chance against Scott Piercy even though the American is in form at 110/1 with bet365 he has to be backed each way.
Dustin Johnson is another who should go well this week and appeals at 33/1 at Paddy Power he can open up with victory against Alex Noren in the battle of big hitters.
The sponsers would love a Rory v Tiger Final but the nature of 18 hole matchplay lends itself to shocks the bookies love this event and it is easy to see why when you look at previous results but don’t be put off enjoy although tread with caution!
Good luck
Angus Loughran
