Coral has slashed Gatewood to 10-1 (from 20-1) for next month’s Emirates Melbourne Cup, following the John Gosden-trained colt’s victory in the Geelong Cup, a race won won by the previous two Cup winners, Americain and Dunaden. The latter is 6-1 favourite for a repeat win in the race that stops a nation, ahead of the Luca Cumani-trained Mount Athos at 7-1, and Americain, 9-1.
“European-trained runners dominate the Melbourne Cup betting, and having won what has become a reliable guide to the big race, John Gosden’s Gatewood is now a major contender to become the first British winner of Australia’s most famous race,” said Coral’s David Stevens.
