Alan Thomson, the former Racing Editor at the Daily Record, puts up five tips to consider at Chester and also Newmarket. View selections below.
FEW jockeys ride the tricky Chester circuit better than Franny Norton and he teams up with popular local owner Dr Marwan Koukash aboard SUGAR HICCUP (2.00). David Simcock’s charge chased home Licence To Till at Haydock last month, running on stoutly after becoming tapped for toe in the straight, and this fillies-only handicap on softer ground looks right up her street.
MEMORY CLOTH (3.10) should also go well on the Roodee for Brian Ellison. The Cape Cross gelding has been raised a crunching 22lb since spreadeagling his field at Ripon in April but he remains competitive, especially on soft ground. Stand To Reason and Resurge fought out a terrific duel here last month and are closely matched again.
There is some very competitive racing at Newmarket and PEARL ICE (2.55) is a strong fancy to supplement Wednesday evening’s very comfortable success at Ripon. David Barron’s sprinter was a winner without a penalty that night, having encountered serious traffic problems when just denied at Thirsk on his previous run, and is one to follow in the coming weeks.
TROOPINGTHECOLOUR (3.30) has been knocking on the door for Steve Gollings and he wouldn’t need to step up much on his last run at York, when chasing home progressive handicapper Media Hype, to take a hand under Frankie Dettori. Landaman is in great heart but his winning form has come on quick ground.
MULAQEN (4.00) caught the handicapper’s attention big style when romping home at York on his seasonal debut for Marcus Tregoning. A whopping 13lb rise is certainly prohibitive but this lightly-raced late developer has plenty of physical scope for even more improvement.
