Live on BBC1: Sun 19.45: Despite riding their luck and failing to convince at times, England defied expectations to finish on top of Group D and their reward is the avoidance of defending champions in the quarter final, where they will instead face Italy.
Both teams are fairly evenly matched according to bookmakers and indeed a few firms are struggling to separate the two, Boylesports pricing both at 9/5 to come out on top in normal time. Paddy Power however, make Roy Hodgson’s boys 15/8 outsiders and with little between the pair in the odds, neutrals are expected to flock towards Stan James’ 9/4 for scores to be level after 90 minutes.
Similarly, William Hill’s 6/1 for it to finish goalless is set to attract cash and with the stalemate in mind, sceptical England supporters seeking insurance for potential heartbreak can tackle Skybet’s 10/1 for the Three Lions to again suffer disappointment in a penalty shootout. Also at 10/1, this time via BetVictor, is a thrilling success for Hodgson’s troops from the spot but the Italian style might actually suit England and another gritty, dogged performance could see the Three Lions sneak it in normal time.
Ladbrokes make them 7/2 to edge out the Azzurri by a one-goal margin, Coral chalk Hodgson’s side up at 13/2 to card a 1-0 success for the second match in a row and Skybet post 11/2 against another England triumph following a level first period.
Predictably, bookmakers aren’t expecting a goal glut and indeed the best price for a match tally of fewer than three is Betfred’s 1/2. Nevertheless, Wayne Rooney, who shook off his ring rust against Ukraine, stands out at 6/1 in bet365’s first scorer betting while Tuesday’s match winner also appeals at 9/4 with the same firm to get on the scoresheet at any stage.
