Paul Ferguson has two tips for us at Royal Ascot today; Astrology in the 3.05 and Gatewood in the 4.25. Compare odds and bet.
Third in the Derby when last seen 20 days ago Astrology (3:05) should return to winning ways if reproducing that form in this afternoon’s King Edward VII Stakes.
Aidan O’Brien’s colt arguably looked the second best horse in the race at Epsom, setting a searching pace and was only collared inside the final two furlongs by his brilliant stable-companion Camelot.
He lost second on the line but it was still a fine effort and he earlier proved he handles soft ground when winning at Chester. It could well be soft at Ascot if the rain continued overnight and the son of Galileo ought to be tough to beat, with Ryan Moore retaining the ride. The selection was trading at 6/4 with Hills last night.
Later on the card, the Listed Wolferton Handicap looks a cracking contest and one that sees several horses who have previously done us good turns locking horns.
That is obviously not ideal, with Danadana looking one to keep on side of when winning the Zetland Gold Cup, while Mijhaar ran in a warm race at York last time (runner-up won the Royal Hunt Cup on Wednesday) and he is likely to have his optimum conditions today of 1m2f and soft ground.
However, it was impossible not to be impressed by Gatewood (4:25) when winning at Epsom for us on Oaks day and John Gosden’s rapidly improving four-year-old just gets the nod.
The Galileo colt won with a bit in hand at York’s Dante meeting and he came from an impossible position to swamp his field off a 5lb higher mark at Epsom last time. He’s been upped another 7lbs by the assessor, but that may not be enough to prevent him landing the hat-trick and he could easily be a Group horse by the end of the season.
William Buick’s mount needs to prove he can handle soft ground, but that’s the only question mark about him and the 9/2 on offer with Ladbrokes last night seemed more than fair.
