Live on ITV1: Thu 19.45: Following Sunday’s 3-1 defeat to Croatia, Ireland face a mammoth task to keep their hopes of reaching the quarter finals alive as they face defending champions Spain in Gdansk. BetVictor price Giovanni Trapattoni’s men at 14/1 to cause a major upset but it’s hard to see past the holders, Ladbrokes’ 2/7 favourites, who will be smarting a touch having failed to beat Italy in their opener.
The Irish can initially make life difficult for the Spaniards by keeping things tight but the patient approach of Vicente del Bosque’s side should see them eventually wear Ireland down and Betfred offer 7/2 for Spain to prevail following a drawn first period.
Elsewhere, Coral quote 5/1 for the world champions to notch twice without reply and that’s worth taking a chance on given that any victory ‘to nil’ is just 5/6 at best with Skybet.
Meanwhile, in attack, del Bosque raised a few eyebrows by not selecting a striker against Italy but he could change tack in this one by opting for a more orthodox formation, especially as his side created a few chances once Fernando Torres entered the fray. A couple were squandered by the Chelsea man but he might be handed more game time here so an opener from him, at 5/1 (Stan James) isn’t out of the question.
