Peter Sharkey previews the penultimate weekend of the Scottish Premier League season where wins for Rangers and Celtic pay a quite outstanding 23/10 double
Punters who suspect Rangers may have a point to prove against Motherwell at Ibrox on Saturday will be heartened to learn that Ally McCoist’s charges have won each of their last seven league duels against the side now poised to claim a Champions League berth at the Glaswegian giants’ expense. Little wonder that Rangers kick off as BetVictor’s clear 13/20 favourites to secure three points, whereas ‘Well open at 9/2 with Paddy Power.
Rangers have scored 27 goals and conceded just three in those seven successive league victories, so it’s a little surprising to see them at such an attractive price to add to their goal tally. Bet365 posts 8/1 in favour of them winning 2-0 and Boylesports chalks 12/1 about a 3-0 home victory.
Kilmarnock and Aberdeen have drawn twice already this term and while Killie are 5/2 with Coral to enjoy a one goal margin of victory and the Dons equally well priced at 2/1 (Betfred) to win, the 12/5 available at Skybet for this fixture to end all square holds obvious appeal.
Although St Mirren hold home advantage in tomorrow’s encounter against Inverness, it’s the Highland team that has enjoyed hegemony in this fixture in recent seasons. Thistle have won four of the pair’s last seven duels, while the Saints have managed just one.
St Mirren kick off as William Hill’s 5/4 jollies, but Inverness look a tad too frothy at 2/1 (Ladbrokes) to claim maximum points. Indeed, a sizeable number of punters have been happy to hedge their bets by supporting the draw (12/5, Stan James), while Paddy Power’s 11/2 marked in favour of it finishing 1-1 has attracted steady support.
Many punters will have experienced a double take when they saw Celtic priced at even money (Skybet) to beat Dundee United on Sunday. The Terrors might be fourth in the league table, but they’ve suffered five home defeats already this term and are accurately priced at 3/1 with Paddy Power to cause an upset and win.
Celtic have won all three league duels against United this season and hammered them in the Scottish Cup, so while the home side are 5/6 with Coral to win when handed a one goal start, they’ll probably require more than artificial assistance to overhaul the champions – Celtic are a massive 8/1 (Boylesports) to win 2-0.
Hearts may have inflicted an unexpected late defeat on St Johnstone in the Scottish Cup, but the Saints have won all three league matches against their Edinburgh rivals this term. Nevertheless, as the pair prepare to clash at Tynecastle on Sunday afternoon, Ladbrokes install the Jambos as their 6/5 favourites to win, whereas the Saints are offered at 5/2 by Betfred.
