Live on Skysports 3: Thu 12.30 & 20.00: Angus Loughran previews this week’s Volvo Matchplay and also the Byron Nelson. Selections.
Martin Kaymer is market leader at 7/1 with Ladbrokes to win this week’s Volvo World Matchplay in Spain but I like the chances of Ian Poulter at 10/1 with Betfred.
The Matchplay at Wentworth in the Autumn used to be one of the season’s highlights and it is great that Volvo have supported this event which gives the players a chance to play another matchplay event in a Ryder Cup Year.
Branden Grace is a non seed who should give you a good run for your money at 16/1 (Skybet) while Paul Lawrie, playing in his 500th European Tour event, is the best value outsider at 25/1 with Boylesports.
This event can lead to shocks as all matches are over 18 holes but with a group format to start with it is heavily weighted on the seeded players making the later stages – then anything can happen.
All credit to Matt Kuchar for honouring his commitment to this week’s Byron Nelson after last week’s big win in The Players Championship at Sawgrass.
Kuchar (14/1 with Sportingbet), along with Adam Scott (12/1, William Hill) and Phil Mickleson (11/1, Coral), head the market in an open event.
2000 Open Champion Louis Oosthuizen looks value here at 25/1 with BetVictor. The South African, who was runner up in the Masters in April at Augusta, may have missed the cut last week but will relish this Texan layout and should give backers a decent run for their money at rewarding odds.
Jason Dufner at 22/1 is my other selection here via bet365. He is now a winner and finished in the top 10 here last year and is an improving player who can mix it with the best. At the bigger prices, Jeff Overton at 40/1 with Blue Square makes most appeal.
Good luck
Angus Loughran
