Live on Sky Sports 2: Thurs 18.00: Angus Loughran previews this week’s Madeira Open and also the Players Championship.
The Players Championship this week looks wide open with Rory McIlroy heading the market at 10/1 with Coral. Luke Donald has a big chance at 14/1 via Betfred but I fancy going for 3 players at bigger odds at Sawgrass.
Nick Watney has a far better chance than Stan James’ odds of 50/1 suggest, he had a top ten finish last time out and played well here last year when finishing 5th.
Ben Crane is too big at 66/1 courtesy of bet365 and having had several good finishes here; he has the right profile and the game to go well this week.
David Toms was 80/1 (Ladbrokes) last year and did little wrong when runner-up beaten in a playoff by KJ Choi he is the same price here this year and looks great each way value with most bookies paying 6 places.
Tiger Woods is worth a saver at 25/1 with Boylesports, but since his victory at Bay Hill he has been disappointing, although I have far from written him off.
The Madeira Open looks wide open and that is reflected in the odds, with Paddy Power and Skybet respectively, installing Alastair Forsyth and Bradley Dredge as joint favourites at 25/1.
Those prices are plenty short enough and I prefer Phillip Price at 50/1 with Blue Square. Two of the Welshman’s three European Tour victories have come on Portuguese soil and he’s in decent enough form to suggest he can perform well.
Good luck
Angus Loughran
