Paul Ferguson has two selections for us today, Sleeping City in the 2.45 (Newt) and Knockfierna in the 3.55 (Lim); Compare odds and bet
The Cats Protection Novices’ Hurdle looks the most interesting race on Newton Abbot’s Sunday card, in which Swing Bowler and Sleeping City (2:45) clash.
The former is unbeaten and made an impressive start to her hurdling career at Ludlow last month, but David Pipe’s well-bred mare carries a 6lb penalty and at the likely prices a chance is taken on Victor Dartnall’s son of Sleeping Car.
He ran a race full of promise when runner-up to Darlan on his hurdling debut in Kempton in November and, given the subsequent exploits of the winner, the five-year-old is of great interest here.
Over in Ireland, Barry Geraghty can maintain his tremendous run in Limerick’s Grade 3 Dawn Run Mares Novice Chase, where he partners the classy Knockfierna (3:55).
Charles Byrnes’s seven-year-old has won three of her last four over fences, giving the distinct impression that she’ll be even better over this sort of trip (has won over this far over hurdles).
The run that really marked her down as a smart novice was her penultimate start, when she was in the process of giving Jewson winner Sir Des Champs a real scare before running out at the second last here on Boxing Day.
Presuming she doesn’t remember that blip, she will be difficult to beat, despite having to give weight away all round. Boylesports offered Evens on Saturday evening and I had expected her to be around an 8/11 shot.
Sunday’s selections:
2:45 Newton Abbot Sleeping City
3:55 Limerick Knockfierna
