Live on SS2: Thu 11.00 & 20.00: Angus Loughran previews this week’s Volvo Golf Champions and also the Humana Challenge on the USPGA.
The Volvo Champions takes place in George this week before the 3 week Middle East Swing and Luis Oosteruizen heads the market at 5/1 (Boylesports) followed by Masters Champ Charl Schwartzel at 13/2 (Sportingbet) and both have obvious claims.
Ernie Els knows the venue better than anyone and is worth a bet at 18/1 (William Hill) in his home event while Robert Rock caught my eye last week and looks over the odds at 33/1 with Betfred.
This is a smaller field with no cut than normal and aside from the obvious I fancy Robert Karlsson at 16/1, courtesy of Paddy Power, to give you a good each run for your money.
The PGA Tour stages The Humana Challenge which was known as the Bob Hope Classic until last year and now a regular 72 hole event having been a 5 day 90 hole event in the past, it is wide open with most firms offering 16/1 the field.
Phil Mickleson has won here twice in 2002 and 2004 and will have his supporters at 18/1 (BetVictor) while Matt Kuchar is a 16/1 market leader with Totesport.
Billy Haas won in 2010 and was runner up last year and looks decent value at 20/1 at Paddy Power while Brian Gay looks worth an each way bet at 35/1 with Blue Square.
Harrison Frazer is a good value outsider at 50/1 with Betfred and having made a fast start is looking for 3 top 10s in a row which he last achieved in 2005. At 40 Frazer is in great form and should go well this week.
Course form is always a factor and those looking for a sporting big priced outsider should note 100/1 DJ Trahan, available at Sportingbet, who was a winner here in 2008 and finished 7th in 2010.
Good luck
Angus Loughran
