Paul Ferguson gets the week off to a start with Karasenir in the 2.45 at Newton Abbot. Compare odds and bet
Newton Abbot stages an interesting beginners’ chase on Monday, in which Karasenir (2:45) can strike at the first time of asking for Philip Hobbs and Richard Johnson.
You will remember from last season he was a young hurdler I was a fan of and, though he let us down when well beaten on his Flat debut back in March, he remains a jumper of some interest, especially on his favoured fast ground.
The five-year-old won a couple of good ground novice hurdles last autumn and was last seen over timber finishing mid-division in the Martin Pipe at Cheltenham off a mark of 137.
Richard Johnson will need to settle him over this 2m5f trip, but they’re likely to go slow and, assuming he jumps proficiently, he should have too much speed for main market rivals Strong Soul and Vico.
Strong Soul has the best chase form on offer, courtesy of his Ffos Las second 11 days ago, but the winner and the third swept by him on the turn for home that day before he plugged on again to regain second.
He might well need a sterner test of stamina, whilst Vico was well beaten on his chase debut a month ago.
Monday’s selection:
