Bookmakers William Hill have made David Haye a big 10/3 underdog in the betting for any re-match against Wladimir Klitschko – ‘We really didn;t fancy David to win the fight and were deliberately the best price on offer, making him 7/4 to beat Wladimir this time, but from the evidence of the fight, leaving aside the condition of David’s toe, we now quote him at even longer odds of 10/3 to win any re-match’ said Hill’s spokesman Graham Sharpe.
‘David has to accept that he got his tactics badly wrong and showed no signs of being able to outbox Klitschko, although he demonstrated great character. In a way, David was as outclassed as Andy Murray was in his Wimbledon semi by Rafa Nadal. We are convinced David will fight on despite his vow to retire at 31, and if he wants another crack at a Klitschko we believe he should opt for brother Vitali who will be more inclined to make an out and out tear-up of the contest – but he’ll still be the outsider against him’
Patriotic punters really got behind Haye, with one William Hill west London betting shop customer staking £60,000 on him.
‘The betting turnover rivalled and may even have exceeded the record £20m gambled on the Ricky Hatton-Floyd Mayweather fight in 2007 and for sure this was the most profitable boxing match we’ve ever bet on, when all the figures are collated we expect to have won the best part of a million pounds.’ said Hill’s spokesman Graham Sharpe.’
