Paul Ferguson has one selections for us on Sunday; Prompter, each way in the 3.25 at Ascot Compare odds and bet
Sunday’s feature at Ascot is the Eagle Rock Stakes, in which Burj Nahar bids to maintain his unbeaten career record.
The Godolphin four-year-old looked good when returning to action last month and he could easily be too good for this lot, despite carrying top-weight.
That said, given the fear of the dreaded ‘bounce’ factor, he looks tight enough in the market so with 9 runners the race looks ripe for an each-way alternative.
Warlu Way and Kiama Bay are improving all the time, but the former has only ever won on good-to-firm and the latter has gone up a rather harsh looking 15lbs for winning a fairly average Chester contest when doing this column a good turn last month.
The one I want to be with at the prices is Prompter (3:25) who looks potentially over-priced at 14/1 with Ladbrokes.
The four-year-old has only won once in his career to date, when beating Northumberland Plate winner Tominator in a Chester maiden around two years ago, but he goes well at Ascot and looked on the way back last time.
Runner-up here on debut back in July 2009, the son of Motivator filled the same spot in the track’s Group 3 Autumn Stakes last that year. That effort came on good-to-soft and that was the going description when again runner-up, this time over course-and-distance, last September.
After a couple of poor runs at the start of the season, the four-year-old shaped better than his finishing position would suggest in the Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes last time and that race is working out extremely well.
Down 2lbs for that, he has his optimum conditions here and this looks a weaker event than the race he contested at the Royal meeting. I can see him running a big race at a nice price.
